You Don’t Lose Strength You Stop Using It
Most people blame age for what discipline stopped maintaining.
They think time took their strength, but really, comfort did.
The truth? You don’t grow old. You go unused.
That hit me the other day watching my parents move.
What should’ve been a simple moment getting out of a car or off the couch looked like a battle.
My parents came to visit recently.
What should’ve been a simple moment — getting out of a car or off the couch — looked like a battle.
Slow.
Stiff.
Frustrating.
Not because they’re weak.
But because the body, when neglected, remembers everything.
And that’s when it hit me
Seeing your parents move is a glimpse into your future.
Unless you change it.
I Told My Son This Last Night
Let’s Be Real
I’m 40 now. A father. A husband. Still in shape.
But age ain’t something you dodge, it’s something you train for.
And the truth most ignore:
Lifting weights isn’t enough.
It might look good on Instagram. But if you can’t squat without cracking, get off the floor without pain, or play with your kids without catching your breath, what’s the point?
You Don’t Need a Gym
Calisthenics has been part of my routine since my teens.
It’s raw. It’s honest.
And it keeps you moving, which is the whole point of fitness in the first place.
People think:
- You need fancy equipment
- Calisthenics can’t build muscle
- High reps don’t matter. All lies.
The real flex?
Being able to control your body. Anywhere. Any time. No excuses.
“I Wanna Look Good Naked Too”
Let’s not front—
I’m still a bodybuilder at heart. I want to look good.
I want to be the husband and dad people look at and say,
“Yo, he’s in shape.”
But looking in shape and being in shape are two different things.
And I’ve always been both.
That’s why this next 4-week season is calisthenics-based.
It’s about longevity.
Not losing your edge.
Not becoming the stiff dad who used to be in shape.
The Method (Simple But Not Easy)
Monday → Lower Body
Tuesday → Upper Body
Wednesday → Mobility / Flex
Thursday → Lower Body
Friday → Upper Body
Saturday/Sunday → Mobility & Flow
I rotate these in sprints. Sometimes I lift heavy. Sometimes I run. But I always come back to bodyweight. It keeps the joints honest and the body guessing.

The Bigger Picture
Age doesn’t mean decline.
It means discipline.
You either follow the same pattern as your parents…
Or you shift. You rewrite the script.
So this is your reminder:
Don’t let life sneak up on you.
Because if you wait until you “have time,” your body might not wait with you.
Most people wait until pain forces them to change.
But if you’re blessed with awareness, that’s your warning — not your excuse.
Strength isn’t lost with age. It’s surrendered, one lazy habit at a time.
So train while you can move.
Stretch while you can bend.
Lead while they’re still watching.
Because one day, your son will study how you get off the couch
and that’ll be his glimpse into the future.
Attack the day,
—Drew
